Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean- the one
who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is
eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws
back and forth instead of up and down- who is gazing
around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and
thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention,
how to fall down into the grass,
how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed,
how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?—Mary Oliver
There are some people whose work affects me a lot...Nick Drake, Mary Oliver, Maya Angelou. Even Albert Einstein! Oh and T.S. Elliot. But this last line to "The Summer Day" is, well, one of the best.
So what ARE you going to do with your one wild and precious life?
This question completely un-nerves me. I can be skipping along, doing my "thing" and whap! The question.
Or more likely, it comes as the other side of the coin, like "you're forgetting to do the plan for your one wild and precious life!"
But even in the negative, suddenly the focus comes in clearer and I am centered in myself again. The ANSWER is never as important as the question.
The answer is "just BE". Be myself in my writing. Write what is important. Tell the truth. Be willing to be mis-understood. Be strong in my convictions. Show compassion. Don't over-think. Say less; listen. Think through the fuzzy parts. Be willing and interested in moving forward one little step at a time.
BE in life. Be in the essential and not the cursory. Be connected with my self. Choose the artistic path.
I know that if I just do that, things will align better in the day. I will have an intuitive sense of my priority. If I can fit in a second, or secondary, all the better.
Priority #1: be essential.
Sub-priority: do something really cool to market my business today.
Day-dream just enough to connect with the breath of the idea suddenly, exquisitely. Call that person, be on plan, on purpose.
Note to self-- connect with my life purpose today while doing my one wild and precious life.
